Fuel Injector Replacement Cost: Parts, Labor & Average Price

Updated  3 sources

Typical cost for one injector

$243 – $709

Fuel injectors spray a precise mist of fuel into the engine, timed by the engine computer. When one sticks open, clogs, or leaks, the engine can misfire, idle roughly, lose power, or burn more fuel than it should. A check engine light with a misfire code on one cylinder is a common first sign.

The final bill swings widely for three reasons: how many injectors you replace, what kind of fuel system the engine uses, and how much of the engine has to come apart to reach them. A port-injected four-cylinder is a very different job from a direct-injection V6 or a diesel pickup. Prices on this page were checked on Oct 11, 2026.

Replacing One Injector or the Full Set

The first decision is whether to replace only the failed injector or all of them. One bad injector does not always mean the others are about to fail, but on high-mileage engines many shops recommend a full set so the injectors flow evenly.

Total cost per injector replaced

Item Typical range Relative price range
Single injector, parts and labor $150 – $500 each
Single injector, newer vehicles $350 – $1,200 each

Newer vehicles often cost more per injector, partly because many use gasoline direct injection. Those injectors run at much higher pressure, the parts cost more, and they are often harder to reach.

Full set replacement (total)

Item Typical range Relative price range
Full set, average $742 – $953
Full set, wider range $500 – $2,500
Diesel injectors, full set $3,000 – $8,000

A full set spreads the labor across all cylinders. Once the fuel rail is off, pulling the remaining injectors adds less time than doing each one on a separate visit. Diesel injectors are in a different price class entirely, as the last row shows.

Fuel Injector Cost: Parts

Injector prices depend on the engine, the brand, and whether the part is new OEM, new aftermarket, or remanufactured.

Parts (per injector)

Item Typical range Relative price range
Injector part, typical $60 – $200 each
Injector part, mid-range $120 – $250 each
Diesel injector $500 – $1,500 each

  • New OEM injectors match the original flow rate and spray pattern and carry the manufacturer's warranty. They are the safest choice on direct-injection and diesel engines.
  • Aftermarket injectors cost less. Quality ranges from excellent to poor, so stick with established brands.
  • Remanufactured injectors are cleaned, rebuilt, flow-tested, and sold with a warranty. They are common for diesel engines, where new parts are expensive.

Most replacement jobs also include new O-rings, seals, and sometimes injector clips or a fuel rail gasket. On some direct-injection and diesel engines, the new injectors must be coded to the engine computer with a scan tool.

Labor Cost to Replace Fuel Injectors

Labor depends on access. On many port-injected engines the injectors sit on top of the intake manifold and come out with the fuel rail. On V-engines and many direct-injection designs, the intake manifold has to be removed first, which adds hours.

Labor

Item Typical range Relative price range
Labor, single injector $100 – $300
Labor, full set $277 – $406
Labor, 1 to 2 hours (mid-range) $200 – $350

Shop Labor Rates

Shop labor rates

Item Typical range Relative price range
Independent shop $75 – $150/hr
Dealership $150 – $250/hr

Dealerships charge more per hour but have factory tools and software for injector coding. Independent shops usually cost less and can handle most gasoline engines. For diesel injectors, a diesel specialist may offer better pricing and experience than a general shop.

Gasoline vs. Diesel Injectors

Gasoline port injectors are the simplest and least expensive. Gasoline direct injectors cost more and operate at higher pressure. Diesel injectors cost the most because they run at extreme pressure and are built to very tight tolerances. On diesel trucks, a full injector set is a major repair, and it pays to get two quotes and ask about remanufactured units with a warranty.

Whatever the engine, the fuel system must be depressurized before work begins. Gasoline leaks near a hot engine are a fire risk, so make sure the shop pressure-tests for leaks after installation.

Cleaning Before Replacing

Not every problem injector needs replacement. Deposits can build up on injector tips and disrupt the spray pattern. Fuel system cleaner added to the tank can help with mild deposits, and some shops offer professional on-car cleaning or off-car ultrasonic cleaning and flow testing.

Cleaning will not fix an injector with a failed electrical coil, a cracked body, or an internal leak. A shop can run a balance test or check resistance and flow to tell the difference. Ask for that diagnosis before approving replacement, especially if only one cylinder shows a problem.

Why Estimates Vary

The two sources below give different ranges because they describe different scopes.

Estimates by source

Item Typical range Relative price range
Jerry $243 – $709
Fuel Logic $300 – $2,500

Sources: Jerry: Fuel injector replacement cost; Fuel Logic: Fuel injector replacement cost

One figure may describe a single injector on a typical gasoline engine. The other may span everything from one injector to a full set on a larger or newer engine. Fuel system type, number of cylinders, labor rates in your area, and the choice of OEM or aftermarket parts may all account for the spread. Compare itemized quotes that state how many injectors are included.

Signs of a Bad Fuel Injector

  • Check engine light, often with a misfire code for one cylinder
  • Rough idle or shaking at stops
  • Hesitation or stumbling when accelerating
  • Worse fuel economy than usual
  • Fuel smell under the hood or near the engine
  • Hard starting, especially when the engine is warm

A fuel smell can mean a leaking injector seal or line, which is a fire hazard. Do not keep driving with a strong gasoline odor; have the car inspected right away.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace one fuel injector?

Replacing one injector typically costs $243 – $709 including parts and labor. On newer vehicles, often with direct injection, a single injector can run $350 – $1,200 each.

How much does it cost to replace all fuel injectors?

A full set averages about $742 – $953, with a wider range of $500 – $2,500 depending on the engine. A diesel set can cost $3,000 – $8,000.

How much does a fuel injector cost by itself?

A typical gasoline injector part runs about $60 – $200 each. Diesel injectors cost much more, about $500 – $1,500 each.

Should I replace all injectors if one fails?

Not always. On a newer engine, replacing just the failed injector is common. On a high-mileage engine, a full set keeps flow balanced and may avoid repeat labor later.

Can fuel injector cleaner fix a bad injector?

It can help with mild deposits. It will not fix an injector that has an electrical fault or internal leak, so get a diagnosis if symptoms continue.
