Headlight Replacement Cost: Parts, Labor & Average Price

Updated  2 sources

Typical repair cost

$86 – $254

Headlight replacement can mean two very different jobs. Swapping a burned-out bulb is quick and cheap. Replacing a cracked, fogged, or failed assembly is a bigger repair, and on newer cars the bulb, lens, and electronics come as one sealed unit.

That gap is why quotes for the "same" repair can differ so much. The lighting technology on your car, how easily the headlight comes out, and whether the new unit needs aiming or coding all change the final price. Figures below were checked on Oct 13, 2026.

Headlight bulb replacement

Item Typical range Relative price range
Halogen bulb replacement (per side) $25 – $100
HID / xenon bulb replacement $150 – $300
LED module replacement $200 – $500

How Much Does It Cost to Replace a Headlight Assembly?

If the lens is cracked, moisture has entered the housing, or an LED or HID module has failed, the whole assembly is usually replaced. Pricing follows the lighting technology. Halogen units are the least expensive, HID and LED units cost more, and adaptive or matrix LED systems on luxury vehicles cost the most.

Headlight assembly replacement (installed, per side)

Item Typical range Relative price range
Halogen assembly $250 – $700
HID / xenon assembly $600 – $1,500
Standard LED assembly $800 – $3,500
Adaptive / matrix LED assembly $2,000 – $5,000

A second guide lists full assemblies by vehicle class instead of by lighting type.

Headlight assembly replacement (Jerry)

Item Typical range Relative price range
Full assembly, mainstream cars (each) $250 – $750
Full assembly, luxury / adaptive LED (each) $800 – $2,500

Aftermarket assemblies can reduce the parts bill on common models, but fit and beam pattern vary by brand. Original-equipment parts generally cost more.

Parts vs. Labor

On an assembly job, parts make up most of the bill and labor is the smaller share. Labor rises when the bumper cover or a wheel liner has to come off to reach the headlight, which is common on newer vehicles.

Parts and labor

Item Typical range
Labor per assembly $80 – $250

Bulb-only jobs flip that ratio: the bulb is cheap and labor is a small charge. Some national retailers will install a bulb you buy from them for a small fee, though policies change and vehicles with hard-to-reach housings are often excluded.

Other Headlight Work You Might Be Quoted

Not every dim or flickering headlight needs a new bulb or housing. A hazy lens can often be restored. Wiring, a fuse, a ballast, or moisture inside the housing can be the real cause, and a shop will usually start with a diagnosis.

Other headlight work

Item Typical range Relative price range
Headlight restoration (polishing hazy lenses) $80 – $150
Wiring, fuse, ballast or moisture repair $150 – $600
Aiming / calibration for adaptive headlights $50 – $300

Adaptive systems and vehicles with front cameras may need the new headlight aimed or calibrated afterward. Some European models also need the new unit coded to the car's computer.

What Affects the Cost

  • Lighting technology. Halogen, HID, LED, and adaptive LED differ widely in part price.
  • Vehicle make and model. Luxury and late-model vehicles usually have higher parts costs and more complex units.
  • OEM vs. aftermarket. Original-equipment assemblies cost more than aftermarket ones.
  • Access. A bumper removal or wheel-liner removal adds labor time.
  • Calibration and coding. Cars with adaptive lighting or camera systems may need additional setup.
  • Shop type. Dealers often charge higher hourly rates than independent shops, but they have the right tools for coding.

Why Estimates Vary

The two sources below describe different jobs. One publishes a typical repair range that blends bulb swaps, restoration, and assembly work. The other focuses on the cost of a full assembly, from basic halogen to sealed LED units. A range that starts at the cost of a simple bulb will always look lower than one that starts at the cost of a housing.

Match the job on your quote to the right row before comparing.

Should You Replace Both Headlights?

Bulbs wear out at a similar rate, so when one fails the other may not be far behind. Some owners replace bulbs in pairs so the light output and color match. Assemblies are different. If only one housing is damaged, replacing that side is common, but older headlights next to a new one can look different because of lens haze or color.

Is a Dim Headlight a Safety Problem?

Yes, it can be. Headlights affect how far you can see and how visible you are to other drivers, and a burned-out lamp may also lead to a traffic stop. If your lights are dim, uneven, or flickering, have a licensed technician inspect them, since the cause may be a bulb, wiring, or the charging system.

Questions to Ask Before You Approve the Work

  • Is the quote for a bulb, a module, or the whole assembly?
  • Is the part original equipment or aftermarket?
  • Does the price include aiming, calibration, or coding?
  • Is there a warranty on the part and the labor?
  • Do both sides need work or only one?

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace a headlight bulb?

A halogen bulb job costs $25 – $100 per side in one guide. HID bulbs cost $150 – $300, and LED modules cost $200 – $500.

How much does a headlight assembly cost?

It depends on the lighting type. A halogen assembly costs $250 – $700 installed, while a standard LED assembly costs $800 – $3,500. Adaptive or matrix LED units cost $2,000 – $5,000.

Why are newer headlights so expensive?

LED and adaptive units are often sealed assemblies that combine the lens, housing, and electronics. When one part fails, the whole unit is replaced.

Can I just restore cloudy headlights instead of replacing them?

For hazy lenses, restoration can be an option and is listed at $80 – $150. If the housing is cracked or has moisture inside, restoration will not fix it.

Does a new headlight need to be aimed?

Often, yes. Aiming keeps the beam pointed at the road instead of at oncoming drivers. Adaptive systems may need calibration, listed at $50 – $300.

How much is labor for a headlight assembly?

Labor is listed at $80 – $250 per assembly. Vehicles that need the bumper removed take longer.
