Tune Up Cost: Parts, Labor & Average Price

Updated  3 sources

Typical total cost

$150 – $600

"Tune-up" does not have one fixed meaning anymore. On older cars it meant adjusting the carburetor and timing and replacing the points and plugs. Modern engines are computer-controlled, so a tune-up today is usually a bundle of maintenance items that keep the engine running smoothly. What is in the bundle depends on the shop and the car.

Prices below come from Jerry and several other published guides, checked as of Oct 11, 2026. Because the package changes from shop to shop, the best approach is to price the individual items.

What Is Included in a Tune-Up?

There is no standard list. A typical package may include some of these items:

  • Spark plug replacement
  • Engine air filter
  • Cabin air filter
  • Fuel filter, on vehicles that have a serviceable one
  • Throttle body cleaning
  • PCV valve
  • Ignition coils, when worn
  • A scan for trouble codes and a general inspection

The vehicle manufacturer's maintenance schedule in the owner's manual is the best guide to what your car needs and when. Many shops will build a tune-up quote from that schedule.

Tune-Up Cost by Item

The table below shows individual items from ThePricer. The spark plug row is a fully installed price, and the filter rows cover the part and labor.

Tune-up items

Item Typical range Relative price range
Spark plug replacement (installed, ThePricer) $284 – $397
Engine air filter $78 – $98
Cabin air filter $91 – $113

These items are listed separately here. If you only need one of them, you do not have to buy a package.

Add-Ons and Extras

Jerry lists optional services that a shop may add. Some apply only to certain engines, and a few may not be needed at all.

Add-ons and extras

Item Typical range Relative price range
Spark plugs (installed, Jerry) $75 – $350
Fuel filter (if serviceable) $60 – $200
Throttle body cleaning $50 – $150
PCV valve $20 – $100

A fuel filter is a good example. Many modern cars have the filter inside the tank, and it is not meant to be changed on a schedule. Ask a shop why it is recommending an add-on, and check the manual before agreeing.

Ignition Parts

Worn ignition coils cause misfires and rough running. They are often replaced as needed instead of as part of a routine package.

Ignition parts

Item Typical range
Ignition coil (each) $80 – $200 each

Labor Cost

Labor is a large part of any tune-up. Rates vary with the shop type and region.

Labor

Item Typical range
Shop labor rate $90 – $200/hr

Why Estimates Vary

Three sources give three different ranges, and the likely reason is that each describes a different bundle.

Estimates by source

Item Typical range Relative price range
Jerry $150 – $600
Synchrony $160 – $360
ThePricer $200 – $400

One may include only plugs and filters, while another adds cleaning services and a diagnostic scan. Engine size matters too. A larger engine with more cylinders needs more plugs, and some plugs are hard to reach. A quote that does not list what is included is hard to compare.

Tune-Up or Spark Plug Replacement?

If your car only needs new spark plugs, a single-item job is cheaper than a package. The spark plug replacement guide on this site covers the cost of plugs by engine size and type. A tune-up makes sense when several items are due at once, because a shop can do them in one visit.

Signs Your Car May Be Due for Service

A tune-up is usually scheduled by mileage or time, but some symptoms suggest the engine needs attention sooner:

  • Rough idle or hesitation when accelerating
  • Hard starting or stalling
  • Worse fuel economy than before
  • A check engine light, which needs a code scan before anyone replaces parts
  • Weak airflow from the vents, which can point to a clogged cabin air filter

These symptoms can also come from problems a tune-up will not fix, such as a failing sensor, a vacuum leak, or a fuel delivery issue. A scan and inspection tell you which it is.

DIY or Professional Tune-Up?

Air filters are among the easiest maintenance jobs, and many owners change them in a few minutes with basic tools. Spark plugs take more care. Plugs have to be torqued to the manufacturer's spec, and on some engines they sit under other components. Over-tightening can damage the cylinder head threads, which is a costly mistake. Fuel system work involves gasoline, so a professional is the safer route there. Do what you are comfortable with and leave the rest to a licensed mechanic.

Is a Tune-Up Worth It?

Routine maintenance can protect fuel economy and reliability. But a package that includes services your car does not need is wasted money. Compare the shop's list with the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual. If the car runs rough, the check engine light is on, or you have hard starts, a diagnosis comes first. A tune-up is not a repair for a specific fault.

What to Ask When Getting Quotes

  • Exactly what services does the tune-up include?
  • Which items does my car's maintenance schedule call for right now?
  • Is the price per item, and does it include parts and labor?
  • Are the parts original equipment or aftermarket?
  • Is there a diagnostic fee, and is it credited if I approve the work?
