Franchises Cost: Startup & Ongoing Costs

Updated  7 sources

Median total cost to open a franchise

$187,750 – $452,000

Franchise costs are hard to compare because "cost" can mean three different things: the fee you pay the brand to join, the total you spend to open the doors, or the money you keep paying once you run the business. A brand with a small fee can still need a large build-out, and a brand with a large fee may need little else.

This guide sorts the numbers by type, then looks at the franchises that sit at the lowest end of the market. All figures come from published surveys and Franchise Disclosure Documents (FDDs), and they reflect different years and methods.

How Much Does a Franchise Cost Overall?

Industry summaries give several overlapping ranges.

Typical franchise costs

Item Typical range Relative price range
Middle half of the market (midpoints) $155,160 – $662,550
Typical single-unit total investment $100,000 – $300,000
Typical initial franchise fee (IFA) $20,000 – $50,000
Typical single-unit franchise fee (SBA guidance) $20,000 – $50,000

Sources: VetMyFranchise: Franchise costs 2026; Fund My Franchise: How much does a franchise cost; WIN: How much does a franchise cost

The median total for non-lodging franchises is $187,750 – $452,000. Another way to describe the market is the middle half of brands, whose midpoints span $155,160 – $662,550. A third source puts a typical single-unit investment at $100,000 – $300,000. These numbers do not conflict so much as describe different slices. One counts medians, one counts midpoints across the central half, and one describes what a single location commonly takes.

For the initial fee alone, two sources agree on $20,000 – $50,000, and a lender-focused guide lists the same span for single-unit fees as $20,000 – $50,000. Those are typical figures. Individual brands go well above or below them.

Franchise Fees at Large Brands

Big names do not follow one pattern.

Initial franchise fee, large brands

Item Price
Jack in the Box initial franchise fee $50,000
Subway initial franchise fee $15,000
Chick-fil-A initial franchise fee $10,000

Sources: Vetted Biz: Chick-fil-A franchise cost; Vetted Biz: Subway franchise cost; Jack in the Box Franchising: Fast-food franchise cost

Jack in the Box lists $50,000, Subway lists $15,000, and Chick-fil-A lists $10,000. Chick-fil-A runs its restaurants through an operator model, so its fee is not comparable to a brand where the franchisee owns the location. For the other two, the fee is only the entry ticket. Construction, equipment, and working capital come on top.

What Franchises Cost After You Open

Ongoing charges are a share of your sales, so they rise and fall with revenue.

Ongoing fees

Item Price
Median royalty (share of gross sales) 6%
Median ad fund (share of gross sales) 2%

Source: VetMyFranchise: Franchise costs 2026

The median royalty is 6% of gross sales, and the median ad fund contribution is 2%. Medians hide a lot of spread. Some brands charge less, some charge more, and some use flat fees instead of a percentage. Because the percentage applies to sales, not profit, a franchise with thin margins can feel the squeeze sooner than one with high margins.

Low Cost Franchises

If you want to start small, service and travel businesses often show the lowest entry costs. Entrepreneur's Franchise 500 list of low-cost options includes these examples.

Low-cost franchises (Entrepreneur Franchise 500)

Item Typical range Relative price range
Stratus Clean (total initial investment) $4,725 – $79,750
Dream Vacations (total initial investment) $2,290 – $20,695
Cruise Planners (total initial investment) $1,945 – $20,505
Corvus Janitorial Systems (total initial investment) $7,575 – $32,500
Jan-Pro Cleaning & Disinfecting (total initial investment) $4,830 – $58,070

Source: Entrepreneur: Franchises under $25,000

Cruise Planners lists $1,945 – $20,505 and Dream Vacations lists $2,290 – $20,695. Cleaning brands appear too: Stratus Clean lists $4,725 – $79,750, Jan-Pro lists $4,830 – $58,070, and Corvus Janitorial Systems lists $7,575 – $32,500.

Notice how wide each range is. The low end usually describes a small, home-based or minimal startup, and the high end describes a larger setup. Which end you land on depends on territory size, equipment, and how fast you grow. Do not assume the low figure is what you will pay.

What Makes a Low Cost Franchise Cheaper?

  • No storefront. Home-based and mobile businesses skip rent and build-out.
  • Light equipment. Services that rely on a phone, a laptop, or basic supplies need less capital.
  • Smaller territories. A smaller starting area can mean lower fees.
  • Labor. Many low-cost franchises depend on the owner doing the work, at least at first.

Lower startup cost does not mean lower risk. A cheap franchise may need years to build a customer base, and your time is a cost even when your cash is not.

Costs People Overlook

  • Working capital. Plan for months when expenses run ahead of sales.
  • Insurance, licenses, and permits. These vary by state and by trade.
  • Training travel. Some brands require you to attend training away from home.
  • Technology fees. Software and systems may be billed on top of royalties.
  • Renewal and transfer fees. These appear in the FDD and matter if you plan to sell later.

How to Compare Brands Fairly

Pull the FDD for each brand and look at Items 5, 6, and 7 side by side. Item 5 covers the initial fee, Item 6 covers other fees, and Item 7 estimates the total startup investment. Check Item 19 for financial performance data, if the brand provides it. Then ask owners how their real costs compared with the estimates.

Review the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) with a franchise attorney and accountant before you pay a deposit or sign anything. This page reports published figures and is not investment advice.
