Grocery for 1: Average Monthly Costs Explained

Updated  5 sources

One person on USDA plans

$302 – $580/mo

Cooking for one has its own quirks. Packages are sized for families, fresh food spoils before you finish it, and small households do not get the bulk savings that large ones do. Per-serving costs can run higher for one person even though the total bill is lower.

A useful benchmark is the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Plans. The USDA prices four spending levels, called thrifty, low-cost, moderate-cost and liberal, and publishes the cost for different ages and household sizes each month. The USDA's own reports could not be read automatically here, so the figures below are quoted from Ramsey Solutions, WTOP, MoneyLion and Yahoo Finance, which cite them.

What a single adult spends on each USDA plan

The table shows a range for each plan because the USDA prices men and women, and different age groups, at different amounts.

One adult by USDA plan (Ramsey Solutions)

Item Typical range Relative price range
Thrifty plan $302 – $379/mo
Low-cost plan $329 – $379/mo
Moderate-cost plan $401 – $474/mo
Liberal plan $511 – $580/mo

The thrifty plan assumes careful shopping, plenty of cooking from scratch and little waste. The liberal plan assumes more meat, more produce and more convenience. Most people choose a level between them, based on income and food preferences.

Weekly costs for a man or a woman

Some reports break the moderate-cost plan into weekly amounts. Men are priced higher than women in the USDA tables, which reflects the reference diets rather than a recommendation about what anyone should eat.

Moderate-cost plan per adult aged 20 to 50 (USDA via WTOP)

Item Price
Man aged 20 to 50, per week $91.60/wk
Woman aged 20 to 50, per week $77.50/wk

To convert these to a monthly budget, multiply by the number of weeks you plan to shop, and remember that the monthly plan costs reported elsewhere may use slightly different month lengths.

How other sources estimate it

Yahoo Finance and MoneyLion give their own ranges for one adult. Yahoo Finance gives a wide range for one adult, while MoneyLion's range refers to the moderate-cost plan.

Estimates by source

Item Typical range Relative price range
Yahoo Finance $370 – $599/mo
MoneyLion $328 – $388/mo

Sources: MoneyLion: Grocery spending in 2026; Yahoo Finance: Average grocery bill 2026

An April 2026 Yahoo Finance report quoted the thrifty plan for an adult aged 20 to 50 at $249 – $313/mo. That range sits below the Ramsey Solutions thrifty range, probably because the two reports are based on different months of USDA data and may treat the single-person adjustment differently. If you compare figures from several sites, check the month and whether the household-size adjustment is included.

Tips for shopping for one

  • Buy produce loose rather than bagged, so you take only what you will eat
  • Freeze bread, cooked grains and portions of meat
  • Use the bulk bins for staples and spices
  • Plan recipes that reuse ingredients across several meals
  • Compare unit prices, since the larger package is not always cheaper
  • Choose store brands for pantry staples

Cooking larger batches and freezing portions turns the one-person problem into an advantage, because you control the leftovers. A rotating menu of a few dishes also keeps waste low.

What changes your grocery bill

Location comes first. Prices differ by state and by neighborhood, and the same basket can cost more in a high-cost city. Your diet matters too. Special diets, organic products and fresh seafood push costs up, while rice, beans, frozen vegetables and seasonal produce hold them down. Shopping habits also play a part. Warehouse stores can lower costs for people who can store and use bulk packs, but a single person may not finish them before they spoil.

Eating out is a separate category. The USDA plans cover food prepared at home only, so a person who dines out often should add that spending separately.

Frequently asked questions

How much should one person spend on groceries per month?

Use the USDA plan that matches your budget. The headline range at the top of this page spans the thrifty to the liberal plan for one adult.

What is a realistic grocery budget for one person?

The moderate-cost plan is a comfortable middle level, and the thrifty plan is the tightest. Pick the level that fits your income and how much you cook.

Do men and women have different grocery budgets?

In the USDA tables, yes. The weekly figures above show the moderate-cost plan for a man and a woman aged 20 to 50.

Why is it harder to save money on groceries when you live alone?

Package sizes are built for larger households, and bulk discounts often mean buying more than one person can use. Freezing portions and planning meals ahead help.

Does the USDA plan include restaurant meals?

No. The plans only price food prepared at home.
