Acupuncture Cost: Prices With & Without Insurance

Updated  2 sources

Average cost per session

$75

Acupuncture is priced by the session, and practices set their own fees. Most charge more for a first visit because it includes an intake and assessment, then less for follow-ups. A few practices sell packages of sessions at a discount, and community clinics often charge much less.

The prices below were checked on Oct 14, 2026 and come from two published guides. They are examples and averages, not quotes from any one practice.

How much does acupuncture cost per session?

GoodRx cites a 2019 study in which sessions paid without insurance averaged $112 each for initial visits and $80 each for follow-ups. Individual practices ranged from $15 – $400 each for a first visit and $15 – $300 each for later ones.

Medical News Today gives a similar picture with a typical initial assessment and a lower follow-up price.

Why estimates vary

The two guides land in a similar place, but the ranges are not identical. One draws on a 2019 study of what patients paid without insurance. The other reports typical clinic pricing. Neither can account for every practice, and the first visit may include services such as a consultation that later visits do not.

Does insurance cover acupuncture?

Coverage depends on your plan. GoodRx reports that plans that do cover acupuncture often charge a copay. Medicare covers acupuncture only for chronic lower back pain, according to the same guide. Some plans limit the number of visits per year. Call your insurer before booking to confirm whether acupuncture is covered, whether the practitioner must be in network, and whether a referral is required.

If your plan does not cover it, the self-pay price applies. Acupuncture may qualify as an eligible expense for an HSA or FSA, which your plan administrator can confirm.

What a bill may include

A first-visit charge often bundles the intake conversation and the treatment, so it can run above the follow-up rate. Some practices add separate fees for extras such as herbal products or other services offered alongside treatment. Ask for an itemized estimate so you can see what is part of the session price and what is optional. If you pay by card at the front desk, ask whether you will get a receipt with the practitioner's license information, since insurers, HSAs, and FSAs often want itemized paperwork.

Packages and payment plans

Some practitioners sell a block of sessions in advance at a lower price per visit. That can reduce the cost per session, but you pay up front and may lose the balance if the practice closes or you stop going. Read the refund and expiration terms before you buy. Others accept payment plans or healthcare credit cards. Compare the total cost, including any financing charges, with the plain self-pay price.

Lower-cost options

Community acupuncture clinics and group sessions often cost less than private sessions. Some practices also use sliding-scale fees based on income.

What affects the cost

  • First visit or follow-up. Intake visits usually cost more.
  • Location. Big-city practices commonly charge more.
  • Practice type. Private rooms, group settings, and clinics inside larger health systems price differently.
  • Packages. Some practitioners sell prepaid sessions at a lower per-visit price.
  • Insurance. A copay may replace the full fee if your plan covers it.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What is the fee for the first visit, and what does it include?
  • What is the fee for each follow-up?
  • Do you offer package pricing or a sliding scale?
  • Do you bill insurance, or will I submit the claim myself?
  • Is there a cancellation fee?

For any question about whether acupuncture is right for you, ask a licensed doctor.
