Kitchen Island Cost: Average Prices & Cost Factors

Updated  3 sources

Average cost

$4,800

A kitchen island adds workspace, storage, and seating, and it often becomes the center of the room. Cost depends on whether you are buying a piece of furniture or building a permanent feature with cabinets, a countertop, plumbing, and appliances.

Before getting quotes, decide what the island needs to do. A prep surface with seating is a very different project from one with a sink and cooktop.

Kitchen Island Cost by Type and Features

Features drive the price. Each utility you run into the island adds labor, permits, and sometimes floor work.

Cost by island type and features

Item Typical range Relative price range
Freestanding or rolling cart $300 – $1,200
Mid-range built-in, semi-custom, quartz top $3,500 – $7,000
Built-in with prep sink and plumbing $5,500 – $10,000
Built-in with cooktop and ventilation $7,000 – $14,000
Fully custom, all features $12,000 – $20,000

A freestanding cart is the least expensive option and can be moved. Built-in islands are anchored to the floor and need enough clearance around them for traffic and open appliance doors.

Cost by Island Shape

Shape changes the amount of cabinetry and countertop needed.

Cost by island shape

Item Typical range Average Relative price range
Galley $1,500 – $7,000$4,250
L-shaped $2,000 – $12,000$7,000
U-shaped $3,000 – $15,000$9,000

Galley islands are straight and simple. L-shaped and U-shaped versions add length, corners, and more surface, so costs rise.

Cabinet Cost per Linear Foot

Cabinets are a major portion of an island. Stock cabinets come in set sizes and are the budget route. Semi-custom offers more sizes and finishes, while custom is built to fit your space.

Cabinet cost per linear foot

Item Typical range Relative price range
Island cabinets, overall range (NerdWallet) $100 – $1,300/linear ft
Stock cabinet boxes, installed $80 – $250/linear ft
Custom cabinet boxes, installed $350 – $800/linear ft

Add-Ons That Change the Bill

Add-on costs

Item Typical range Relative price range
Sink $400 – $1,500
Plumbing $500 – $1,900

Adding a sink means plumbing for supply, drain, and a vent, which may require opening the floor. A cooktop adds gas or electrical work, plus ventilation, which is often the most complex part. Outlets in an island must meet electrical code, and your local building department can tell you which permits apply. Use licensed plumbers and electricians for these tasks.

Countertops and Seating

Countertop material is a significant part of the price, and the island is often the largest continuous surface in the kitchen. Quartz and granite cost more than laminate or butcher block, while a thick waterfall edge adds fabrication labor. If you want seating, plan an overhang that suits the stool height. A counter that overhangs without support can crack under weight, so ask the fabricator whether brackets or legs are needed.

Room Size and Layout

An island needs space around it. As a general planning rule, leave enough clearance on every side to walk and open appliances comfortably. If your kitchen is too tight, a slim cart or a peninsula might be a better use of budget than a full island.

Where Island Money Usually Goes

On most projects, the cabinet boxes, the countertop, and any utilities take the largest shares. Appliances sit outside those figures unless you add them, so a cooktop or dishwasher is a separate purchase. Lighting above the island is another common extra, along with stools. Flooring is worth checking too. If your floor runs under the island, a contractor must match it, and if it does not, patching may be needed after you move the island's footprint.

When you compare bids, line them up by what is included, not by the bottom line. An inexpensive quote that leaves out the countertop and electrical work will end up costing more than a complete one.

Why Estimates Vary

The three sources below do not describe the same island. One averages across all builds, another is centered on mid-range projects, and the last shows a narrow contractor range. Labor rates, cabinet quality, and countertop choice account for most of the gaps.

Building It Yourself

An island made from stock cabinets and a ready-cut countertop is a manageable DIY project if you skip plumbing and gas. The cabinets must be level and fastened to the floor. If your plan includes a sink, a cooktop, or new circuits, hire licensed trades.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring

  • Does the price include countertop, cabinets, and installation?
  • Who handles plumbing, electrical, and permits?
  • Is flooring repair under the island included?
  • What lead time applies to custom cabinets or stone?
  • What warranty covers the cabinetry and installation?
