Stairlift Cost: Average Prices & Cost Factors

Updated  3 sources

New straight stairlift, installed

$3,200 – $4,500

A stairlift is a powered chair that rides a rail along a staircase, so someone with limited mobility can move between floors without climbing. The price depends mostly on the shape of the stairs. A single straight run is the simplest and cheapest case. Turns, landings, and outdoor stairs push the price up.

This guide covers what dealers and consumer guides report for new, refurbished, and rental units. It is not medical advice. If you are choosing a lift for yourself or a family member, a doctor or occupational therapist can help you decide what suits the person's needs.

Straight vs. Curved Stairlifts

A straight stairlift runs on a rail that follows a staircase without turns. Manufacturers build these in standard sizes, so they are widely available and quicker to supply.

A curved stairlift is a different product. The rail has to be custom-built around each bend or landing, which is why the price is several times higher and delivery takes longer. Measure and survey visits are part of the process, and the rail is fabricated for your exact staircase.

If your stairs have a single turn, ask the dealer to compare a curved lift against other options, such as two straight lifts with a landing between them.

Stairlift Rental Cost

Renting is an option for short-term needs, such as recovery from surgery or an injury. Monthly rates look low next to a purchase, but setup fees and installation and removal charges can narrow the gap on short rentals.

Stairlift rental cost per month

Item Typical range Relative price range
Stairlift rental (monthly, excluding installation and removal) $80 – $600/mo
Straight stairlift rental (monthly) $150 – $300/mo

If you expect to need the lift for a year or more, compare the total rental cost with the purchase price of a refurbished unit.

Installation and Add-On Costs

Many dealers fold installation into the price. Others bill it separately, so confirm which applies before you compare quotes. Options and upgrades add to the base price too.

Installation and add-on costs

Item Typical range Relative price range
Installation fee (when billed separately) $500 – $2,000
Rental setup fee $500 – $1,000
Powered swivel seat (adds) $300 – $500
Folding rail (adds) $200 – $400
Outdoor weather sealing (adds to indoor price) $500 – $1,500

Common upgrades include a powered swivel seat, which helps a rider get on and off safely at the top of the stairs, a folding rail that keeps the bottom of the staircase clear, and weather sealing for outdoor use.

What Affects the Cost of a Stairlift

  • Staircase shape. Straight runs cost the least. Curves, landings, and multiple flights cost more.
  • Indoor or outdoor. Outdoor units need weather protection.
  • Weight capacity. Heavy-duty units cost more.
  • Seat features. Swivel seats, powered footrests, and folding seats are upgrades.
  • New or refurbished. Refurbished lifts cost less, though the warranty is usually shorter.
  • Installation. Some dealers include it and others charge extra.
  • Battery and power. Most units run on rechargeable batteries so they keep working in a power cut.

Why Estimates Vary

Sources report different ranges because they describe different products and sales channels. A dealer quoting new straight lifts will land in a narrow range. A broad consumer guide that covers curved and outdoor lifts will show a much wider one.

Estimates by source

Item Typical range Relative price range
All American Stairlifts (new straight, installed) $3,200 – $4,500
ConsumerAffairs $3,000 – $22,000
101 Mobility (new straight, installed) $2,800 – $8,000

Read each label to see what the number covers. A range that includes curved rails is not comparable to a straight-only price.

Will Insurance or Medicare Pay for a Stairlift?

Coverage varies. Check with your insurer, and with your plan's customer service, before you buy. Some programs and veterans' benefits help with home accessibility, and some areas have local grants or loan programs for home modifications. Your local Area Agency on Aging can point you toward programs near you. A dealer cannot always tell you what your own plan covers, so ask your plan directly.

What to Ask a Stairlift Dealer

  • Is the quote for a new or refurbished unit, and is installation included?
  • What is the weight limit and the warranty on parts and labor?
  • Does the lift have a battery backup, a seat belt, and safety sensors?
  • What does maintenance and service cost after the warranty ends?
  • Can the lift be removed later, and is there a buy-back or removal fee?
  • Can you see a demonstration at home before you commit?

Get at least two quotes, and make sure a technician visits your stairs. Measurements taken over the phone can lead to surprises.
