Medicare Plan N Cost: Average Rates & What Drives Them

Updated  3 sources

Plan N premium at age 65

$148 – $249/mo

Medicare Supplement Plan N, often called Medigap Plan N, is a private policy that fills some of the gaps in Original Medicare. Insurers set their own premiums, so there is no single national price. Plan N is also sold with copayments, which keeps its premium below plans that cover more.

Three costs add up. The monthly premium goes to the insurer. Copayments and the Part B deductible are paid when you use care. A separate drug plan, if you need one, is billed on its own. The sections below separate these so you can see which numbers belong together.

How much does Medigap Plan N cost per month?

MoneyGeek's 2026 Plan N analysis reports a range at age 65. Attained-age pricing starts at $148/mo, and community rating reaches $249/mo for the same coverage. The gap comes from the rating method, not from the benefits, which are standardized.

Age matters differently under each method. Attained-age premiums rise with every birthday. Issue-age premiums are set by the age you enroll. Community-rated premiums do not depend on age. MoneyGeek lists each method at ages 65 and 75.

Why the estimates differ

The two MoneyGeek pages answer different questions, so their age-65 figures do not match. The Plan N page breaks premiums out by pricing method and shows the lowest entry price under attained-age pricing. The plan cost page averages by insurer and is not tied to a single rating method. A number from one page should not be set beside a number from the other without noting that difference.

Other reasons a quote can land away from these averages:

  • State and ZIP code, since insurers price by area.
  • Age at enrollment and the rating method the insurer uses.
  • Tobacco use and, in some states, gender.
  • Whether the insurer offers a household or other discount.
  • Health at enrollment, if you are applying outside your guaranteed-issue window.

Treat the tables as national reference points. Only a quote for your ZIP code shows what an insurer will charge you.

Deductibles, copays and what Plan N does not cover

Plan N pays Part B coinsurance but leaves two small costs with you. Medicare.gov says you may owe a copayment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for an emergency room visit that does not lead to admission.

Plan N also does not pay the yearly Part B deductible, which is $283 in 2026. It does not cover prescription drugs, so most enrollees add a Part D plan, which MoneyGeek puts at $20 – $80/mo in most markets.

Fees and deductibles

Item Typical range Price
Part B deductible (2026) —$283
Plan N office visit copay (up to) —$20
Plan N emergency room copay (up to) —$50
Separate Part D plan (not covered by Plan N) $20 – $80/mo—

Plan N also does not cover Part B excess charges, which can apply when a provider does not accept Medicare assignment. Ask your doctors whether they accept assignment before you enroll.

What to ask before you buy

  • Which rating method does this insurer use, and how fast will the premium rise?
  • Is the quote for my ZIP code, age and tobacco status?
  • What happens to the rate at renewal?
  • Do my doctors accept Medicare assignment?
  • Is there a household discount?

Frequently asked questions

How much is Medicare Plan N per month?

In MoneyGeek's 2026 analysis, a 65-year-old pays $148 – $249/mo, depending on the pricing method. Your own quote will differ by location and insurer.

Why does the Plan N premium go up each year?

Under attained-age pricing, the premium rises as you get older. Issue-age and community-rated policies are priced differently, so they climb more slowly or not by age at all, though insurers can still raise rates for other reasons.

What copays does Plan N have?

Medicare.gov says up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that do not result in admission.

Does Plan N cover the Part B deductible?

No. The 2026 Part B deductible is $283, and you pay it yourself.

Does Plan N include drug coverage?

No. You would need a separate Part D plan.

Where can I compare Medigap policies?

Medicare.gov has a Medigap plan benefits chart. Your state SHIP counselor or a licensed agent can help compare actual policies.
