USPS Insurance Cost: Average Rates & What Drives Them

Updated  2 sources

Typical fee

$2.80 – $9.05

USPS sells extra insurance on packages sent as merchandise, and the fee depends on the value you declare. Some services already include a small amount of coverage, so many senders pay nothing extra for low-value items. For higher-value shipments, the fee follows a fixed table published by the Postal Service.

The figures on this page come from USPS Notice 123, the official price list, so they are published fees. Check the current notice before you ship, since USPS revises its prices on a schedule. If you ship valuable or hard to replace items often, a licensed insurance agent can discuss other options.

How much USPS insurance costs

The fee is set by bands of coverage. You choose the amount, and the fee for that band is added to postage and any other extra services.

Insurance fee by coverage amount

Item Price
$0.01 to $50.00 $2.80
$50.01 to $100.00 $3.50
$100.01 to $200.00 $4.50
$200.01 to $300.00 $4.55
$300.01 to $400.00 $6.05
$400.01 to $500.00 $7.55
$500.01 to $600.00 $9.05
Over $600, per additional $100 (or fraction) $1.50

The bands rise in steps. A package declared at 50 dollars or less costs the least, and the fee grows with each higher band. Above 600 dollars, the fee is the last band plus a per-100 charge for each additional 100 dollars of declared value or part of it. USPS lists a maximum liability of 5,000 dollars on merchandise insurance.

What is already included

You may not need to buy insurance at all. USPS lists a set amount of coverage as part of certain services.

Included coverage and limits

Item Price
Insurance included with Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express and Ground Advantage $100
Maximum insurance that can be purchased $5,000

The included amount is shown for Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, and USPS Ground Advantage. Coverage beyond that is purchased as extra insurance. The maximum shown is the most you can buy, so very valuable shipments may need a different arrangement.

Insurance Restricted Delivery is a separate add-on fee for insured items. The bulk discount applies per piece to articles insured above 500 dollars. Both appear in the same price list, so you can check them with the main table.

Is USPS insurance worth buying?

That depends on what you ship. USPS merchandise insurance is described as covering loss, damage, or missing contents. Before you pay, consider:

  • What the item cost or would cost to replace
  • Whether the included coverage already covers it
  • Whether tracking and signature options matter for the shipment

USPS sets its own claim rules, so read them before you buy. The Postal Service publishes the terms in its Domestic Mail Manual.

What determines the fee

Only one thing sets the insurance fee: the coverage amount you request. The weight of the package, the distance, and the service you pick change the postage, not the insurance charge. Declaring a value just under a band boundary can lower the fee, but the declared value should match what the contents are worth. Declaring less than the item's value may leave you short if you need to file a claim.

Because the fee is added to postage, the total cost of a shipment is the postage for your chosen service plus the insurance fee for your declared value, plus any other extra services such as signature or return receipt.

How to buy insurance on a package

You can add insurance when you buy postage online or at a Post Office counter. State the value of the contents, and the system adds the fee for that band. Keep your receipt and any invoice showing the item's value in case you need to file a claim.

USPS insurance versus other carriers

Other carriers price their own declared value coverage differently, so check each carrier's official rate pages for current fees. Compare the total cost of the shipment, including postage, rather than the insurance fee alone.
