How Much Does It Cost to Take the LSAT? (Price Guide)

Updated  1 source

LSAT registration fee

$253

The Law School Admission Council (LSAC) runs the LSAT and sets one registration fee for each testing year. The test is only one piece of the cost of applying to law school, though. Most applicants also pay for the Credential Assembly Service and a report for every school they apply to.

All figures on this page come from the LSAC fees page, checked on Oct 11, 2026. The current fee applies to the August 2026 through June 2027 testing year. LSAC sets fees per testing year, so confirm the amounts on lsac.org before you register.

What the LSAT Registration Fee Includes

The registration fee covers one LSAT administration plus LSAT Argumentative Writing, the unscored writing sample that law schools receive with your score. LSAC doesn't sell Argumentative Writing on its own. If you have already completed an LSAT Writing or Argumentative Writing sample, you don't need to do it again when you retake the test.

LSAC charges all fees in U.S. dollars. If you live outside the United States, your country's taxes and exchange rate may change what you actually pay.

Law School Application Fees Through LSAC

Most ABA-approved law schools require applicants to use LSAC's Credential Assembly Service (CAS). CAS collects your transcripts, letters of recommendation, and LSAT scores, then sends a report to each school.

Credential Assembly Service (CAS) $219
CAS Law School Report (per law school) $45

The CAS subscription costs $219, and each Law School Report costs $45. Your total grows with the number of schools you apply to. LSAC no longer offers partial refunds of the CAS fee. Individual law schools may charge their own application fees on top of this; those vary by school and aren't in our data.

Optional LSAT Add-Ons

None of these are required, but some test takers buy them for flexibility or peace of mind.

Optional LSAT add-ons

Score Preview, before testing $46
Score Preview, after testing ends $87

LSAT Score Preview

Score Preview lets you see your score before deciding whether to keep it on your record. Buying it before the first day of testing costs $46. Waiting until after testing ends raises the price to $87, so decide early if you think you'll want it.

Score Audit and Candidate Report

A Score Audit, which rechecks how your answers were scored, costs $150, or $75 if LSAC has pre-approved you for a fee waiver. The Official Candidate LSAT Score Report costs $50 and includes scores that aren't reportable to schools.

LSAT Date Change Fees

You can change your test date for free through your test administration's registration deadline. After that, the fee depends on how late you are.

Test date change fees

Item Price
Date change up to 7 days after registration deadline $153
Date change 8 days after deadline through day before testing $253

Changing your date up to seven days after the registration deadline costs $153. From eight days after the deadline through the day before testing begins, the fee is $253. If your plans are uncertain, settle your date before the registration deadline passes.

LSAC Fee Waivers

LSAC offers fee waivers to test takers who can show financial need. Approved candidates may receive reduced or waived fees for the LSAT, CAS, and Law School Reports, and the waiver lowers the Score Audit fee as shown above. Eligibility rules and deadlines are on lsac.org; apply for a waiver before you register, since approval can take time.

How to Keep Your LSAT Costs Down

  • Register for one date you're ready for, so you don't pay the full fee twice.
  • Lock in your test date before the registration deadline to avoid change fees.
  • Buy Score Preview before testing starts if you think you'll want it.
  • Apply to a focused list of schools, since each one adds a Law School Report.
  • Check whether you qualify for an LSAC fee waiver before paying anything.
