Wheat farm price forecast

$6.30/bushel

Wheat prices come in many forms. Traders watch futures contracts, exporters watch port prices, and farmers watch what elevators pay at harvest. The figures on this page are the U.S. Department of Agriculture's season-average farm price, an estimate of what growers receive across a full marketing year. They show the broad direction of the wheat market and not a price you could lock in today.

USDA publishes the number in its monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report, known as WASDE. Wheat is priced per bushel, a volume measure that for wheat corresponds to a standard weight of 60 pounds.

What is the price of wheat?

The latest projection for the 2026/27 marketing year is $6.30/bushel, taken from the October WASDE. The table compares it with the September forecast, the estimate for the prior year, and the final figure for the year before that.

U.S. season-average farm price (USDA)

Item Price
Wheat farm price, 2026/27 (September forecast) $6.40/bushel
Wheat farm price, 2025/26 (estimate) $5.06/bushel
Wheat farm price, 2024/25 $5.52/bushel

Comparing the October and September forecasts shows how USDA changed its view in a single month. The revision comes from updated production, use and stocks information, and the agency explains its reasoning in the report text.

Season-average price vs the price on the day

A season-average price blends sales throughout the marketing year, including harvest-time sales that often come at different prices than later sales. For that reason, it will not match a futures quote or a local cash bid on any given day. A grower or buyer who needs a current price should ask a local elevator or check an exchange quote.

Wheat classes and why prices differ

U.S. wheat is grown in several classes, including hard red winter, soft red winter, hard red spring, white and durum. Each has its own uses, from bread flour to pastry to pasta, and each is priced differently depending on protein content, supply and demand. The all-wheat average on this page blends them together, so any single class may sit above or below it.

What moves wheat prices

Many things influence wheat, and the importance of each changes from year to year:

  • Weather during planting, growing and harvest, including drought and freeze events.
  • Planted area and expected yield.
  • Beginning and ending stocks, which show how tight supplies are.
  • Export demand and the output of other major exporting countries.
  • Energy and fertilizer costs, which affect production decisions.

USDA's monthly reports discuss which of these drove each revision.

Wheat prices and food prices

Wheat is the main ingredient in flour, bread, pasta and many baked goods, but the grain is only one part of what you pay for them. Milling, baking, packaging, transportation, labor and retail margins also matter, so a change in the farm price tends to have a limited and delayed effect on grocery prices.

What the forecast means for farmers and buyers

A higher projected farm price can improve returns for growers, while mills and bakeries may see higher input costs. How much of that is passed on depends on contracts, competition and how long buyers hold inventory. Because USDA revises the forecast monthly, treat it as an informed estimate and not a guarantee.

Where to check the latest wheat price

Frequently asked questions

What is a bushel of wheat?

A bushel is a volume measure used for grain. For wheat it is treated as a standard weight, generally 60 pounds.

What does season-average farm price mean?

It is USDA's estimate of the average price farmers receive over the entire marketing year, weighted by when the wheat is sold.

Is this the same as the wheat futures price?

No. Futures prices are quoted daily on an exchange for future delivery. The farm price is an average of what growers actually receive.

Why did USDA change its forecast from September to October?

USDA revises projections each month as new data on crop size, demand and stocks arrives. The report text explains the reasoning.

How often is the wheat price forecast updated?

Monthly, with each WASDE release.
