How Much Does DoorDash Pay? Hourly Wages by Role

Updated  3 sources

Average gross pay

$12.43/hr

DoorDash does not pay an hourly wage in most places. Dashers are independent contractors who are paid for each order, and each offer combines a base amount set by the app with whatever tip the customer adds. How much that works out to per hour depends on the market, the time of day, how many offers you accept and how long you wait between them.

That is why published figures disagree. Some sources count only the minutes spent on an order, others count every minute you are logged in, and some include tips while others do not. This page keeps those definitions separate so you can compare like with like.

How much does DoorDash pay per hour?

The most useful national benchmark comes from Gridwise, which tracks earnings reported by drivers. For 2025 it reports an average of $12.43/hr in gross pay, measured over active time only. An active hour counts only the time you spend on an order, so waiting for offers and driving back to a busy area are left out.

A second measure covers the whole working hour. The median Dasher earned $11.26/hr in base pay plus tips, measured over working time, in the same dataset. The median is lower than the average because a smaller group of high earners pulls the average up. Neither number subtracts vehicle costs, so take-home pay is lower. Gas, maintenance and mileage reduce net earnings, and the effect is larger for drivers who cover a lot of ground between orders.

How much does DoorDash pay per delivery?

There is no single per-delivery rate. The app shows an offer before you accept, and the amount depends on distance, estimated time and demand, plus any tip. Because the base amount varies, the figures that hold up best are per-hour and per-week averages instead of a flat per-order number.

Two other reference points help. Gridwise reports that Dashers made $240/wk on average across all kinds of schedules, from a few weekend hours to full-time work. That is a national average across very different workloads, so it says little about what any one person will make. The same source puts average earnings at $0.92 per mile driven, which gives a way to judge whether a long, low-paying offer is worth taking once your own cost per mile is in the picture.

City minimum pay rules

A few cities set a pay floor for app-based delivery workers. These rules are official and apply only inside the city that adopted them.

In New York City, delivery apps including DoorDash must pay workers at least $22.13/hr for time spent preparing and making deliveries, not counting tips. The city's consumer and worker protection agency publishes the rate and says it adjusts each April.

Seattle uses a different formula. Instead of an hourly rate, the city sets minimum amounts that an offer must meet. Seattle OLS lists these amounts for 2026.

Seattle minimum pay amounts (2026)

Item Price
Seattle minimum per engaged minute $0.47
Seattle minimum per engaged mile $0.80
Seattle minimum per offer $5.34

Seattle's rules apply to the engaged time and distance of an offer, so a short, close order is still guaranteed a minimum per offer. Outside cities with their own rules, DoorDash sets pay using its own formula.

What changes what you earn

Several factors move a Dasher's income more than the app itself does.

  • Market and timing. Busy meal periods and dense areas usually mean more offers and shorter gaps. Slow afternoons and spread-out suburbs often mean the opposite.
  • Offer selection. Accepting only offers that clear a minimum per mile or per minute can raise your hourly rate, but it also means more idle time.
  • Tips. Tips make up a large share of income for many Dashers, and they vary by area and by customer.
  • Vehicle. Fuel economy, insurance, repairs and depreciation all differ between a small hybrid car and a large truck, and they come out of your gross pay.
  • Hours worked. Part-time and full-time Dashers can see very different weekly totals, which is why a single average hides a wide spread.

Why estimates vary

If you search for Dasher pay you will find ranges that start well below and end well above the figures here. Some differences are real, since a Dasher in a city with a pay floor can earn more than one in a small town. Others come from method. A survey of drivers may capture people who work peak hours, while data from a tracking app may include many casual drivers. Whether a number is gross or net, per active hour or per logged-in hour, changes it more than any market difference does. When you compare sources, check those three details first.

How to estimate your own pay

Track a week of work before you decide whether DoorDash is worth your time. Write down your logged-in hours, active hours, total earnings including tips, and miles driven. Divide earnings by logged-in hours for a realistic hourly figure, then divide by miles to see how much each mile brings in. If you are comparing apps, use the same method for each one so the results are comparable. For tax questions, speak with a qualified tax professional.
