How Much Does It Cost to Renew Passport? (Price Guide)

Updated  2 sources

Adult passport book renewal by mail

$130

Renewing a U.S. passport usually costs less than getting your first one. The State Department charges the same application fee, but if you qualify to renew by mail you don't visit an acceptance facility, so there is no execution fee to pay.

The fee components below come from the State Department's schedule of fees in the Code of Federal Regulations (22 CFR 22.1), in the version effective July 1, 2026, as published in the eCFR. We checked them on Oct 11, 2026. Confirm the current amounts on travel.state.gov before you send payment, since fees can change by rule.

What the Renewal Fee Covers

The renewal fee for a passport book is made of two government charges that you pay together in one payment to the U.S. Department of State:

  • The application services fee for applicants age 16 and over: $50
  • The passport book security surcharge: $80

The table also shows the first-time adult book total for comparison. The difference between the two is the acceptance fee, which renewals by mail don't pay.

Fees (no acceptance fee for renewals)

Item Price
Application services, age 16 and over (including renewals) $50
Passport book security surcharge (enhanced border security fee) $80
For comparison: first-time adult book (includes $35 acceptance fee) $165

If you also want a passport card, or want only a card, the fee is different from the book fee. Check the State Department's fee chart for the card amount, since it isn't in our data.

Can You Renew by Mail?

Most adults can. In general, you can renew by mail if your most recent passport:

  • Is undamaged and you can send it with your application
  • Was issued when you were 16 or older
  • Was issued within the last 15 years
  • Was issued in your current name, or you can document a name change

If any of these don't apply, you must apply in person as a first-time applicant. That means paying the execution fee to the acceptance facility on top of the State Department fee. Children under 16 can't renew by mail and always apply in person.

The State Department has also offered online renewal for eligible adults. Eligibility rules and availability can differ from mail renewal, so check travel.state.gov for the current details before choosing.

How to Pay the Renewal Fee

For a mail renewal, you send one payment to the U.S. Department of State with your application form, photo, and old passport. Check the form instructions for accepted payment methods and the exact payee name. A payment made out to the wrong payee can delay your application.

Optional Costs When Renewing

Expedited Processing

If you need your passport back sooner than routine processing allows, expedited service adds $60 to the renewal fee. Routine and expedited processing times change throughout the year, so check the current estimates before you pay for speed.

The State Department also sells faster return delivery for an additional charge. That amount isn't in our data, so look it up on the official fee page if you need it.

Photo and Postage

Your renewal needs a new photo that meets State Department rules. You can take it yourself, or pay a post office, pharmacy, or photo shop. You'll also pay postage to mail your application, and a trackable mail service costs more than a regular stamp but tells you when your passport arrives.

When to Renew to Avoid Extra Costs

Many countries require your passport to be valid for several months beyond your travel dates, and some airlines check this at boarding. Renewing well before your passport expires lets you choose routine service instead of paying for expedited service and faster delivery.

  • Check your passport's expiration date when you start planning any international trip.
  • Renew early if the passport expires within the next year and you have travel coming up.
  • Avoid booking nonrefundable travel that depends on a passport you haven't received yet.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to renew my passport?

Renewing an adult passport book by mail costs $130. That is the application services fee of $50 plus the book security surcharge of $80.

Is renewing a passport cheaper than getting a new one?

Yes, if you renew by mail. A first-time adult book costs $165 because it includes the acceptance fee. Mail renewals don't pay that fee.

Do I pay the acceptance fee when I renew?

Not if you qualify for renewal by mail. If you must apply in person, for example because your old passport was lost, stolen, damaged, or issued before you turned 16, you pay the execution fee too.

How much does it cost to renew a passport fast?

Expedited service adds $60 to the regular renewal fee. Faster return delivery is a separate optional charge listed on the State Department's fee page.

Can I renew a child's passport by mail?
