Real ID PA Cost: Average Fees Explained

Updated  2 sources

One-time PA REAL ID fee

$30

Pennsylvania charges for REAL ID in two parts. The first is a one-time REAL ID fee that you pay only once, the first time you get a REAL ID product. The second is the regular fee for the license or photo ID card itself, the same amount any Pennsylvania driver pays to renew.

The figures on this page come from PennDOT's REAL ID and payments pages, checked on Oct 11, 2026. They apply only to Pennsylvania; other states set their own REAL ID fees. Fees can change, so confirm the current amounts on pa.gov before you apply.

How Much Does a REAL ID Cost in PA?

Your total is the REAL ID fee of $30 plus whichever standard fee applies to you. For most adult drivers, that standard fee is the four-year license renewal of $39.50. Drivers 65 and older can choose a two-year renewal for $27.50 instead.

Standard license fees (added to REAL ID fee)

Item Price
Four-year license renewal $39.50
Two-year license renewal (age 65+) $27.50
Initial permit and four-year license $45.50
Initial permit and two-year license (age 65+) $33.50
Duplicate or replacement license $42.50
Photo ID card (initial) $43.50
Photo ID card (renewal) $44.50
Duplicate camera card (license or ID) $5

PennDOT applies the same structure to photo ID cards. Non-drivers pay the one-time REAL ID fee plus the photo ID card fee: $43.50 for an initial card or $44.50 for a renewal.

Getting a REAL ID at Renewal vs Before Renewal

PennDOT offers two timing options, and the price works the same way in both.

  • At renewal, you request REAL ID during your regular renewal and pay the one-time REAL ID fee plus your standard renewal fee.
  • Before renewal, you pay the same two fees, and your new REAL ID includes the time left on your current license plus an additional four years. Your expiration date moves out to match.

Do You Have to Pay for REAL ID in Pennsylvania?

No. PennDOT states that REAL ID is optional. Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID or another federally accepted ID, such as a U.S. passport or military ID, to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities. If you already have a valid passport and don't mind carrying it, you can skip the REAL ID fee and keep a standard license.

A standard Pennsylvania license still works as a driver's license and for everyday ID purposes.

How to Apply and What It Costs to Get There

If PennDOT has already verified your documents (called "pre-verified"), you can order your REAL ID online. If you haven't been pre-verified, you must visit a Driver License Center in person to have your documents checked, imaged, and verified.

That visit has no separate fee in PennDOT's schedule, but you may have small costs to get your documents together:

  • A certified copy of your birth certificate, if you can't find yours
  • Proof of your Social Security number
  • Two proofs of your current Pennsylvania address
  • Proof of any legal name change, such as a marriage certificate

Non-U.S. citizens may need additional documentation based on immigration status. Check PennDOT's document list before you go so you don't need a second trip.

Replacement and Duplicate Fees

If you lose your REAL ID license, you pay the duplicate or replacement fee of $42.50, not the REAL ID fee again. A duplicate camera card costs $5. The one-time REAL ID fee is charged only once.
