How Much Does It Cost to Get a Real ID? (Price Guide)
Example state fee
$46
California charges $46 for an original or renewal driver license. Your own state sets its own fee, so the amount you pay may be different.
A REAL ID is a driver license or state ID card that meets federal security standards. There is no single national price for one. Each state's motor vehicle agency sets its own fees, and the fee you pay depends mainly on the state, the type of card, and whether you are getting a first card, a renewal, or an upgrade.
The headline figure above is California's fee, used here as one example, not a national average. Pennsylvania, New York, Colorado, and Washington are shown below to illustrate how much the pricing differs. To find the exact amount for your state, check your state's DMV or driver licensing agency website before you go. Figures on this page were checked on Oct 13, 2026.

Does a REAL ID cost extra?
It depends on the state. Some states charge a separate REAL ID fee on top of the normal license fee, and some do not.
Surcharge on top of the license fee
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Pennsylvania one-time REAL ID fee | $30 |
| New York Enhanced license surcharge (REAL ID itself has no extra fee) | $30 |
Sources: PennDOT: REAL ID FAQs; Montgomery County NY DMV: REAL ID and enhanced license
Pennsylvania charges a one-time REAL ID fee of $30, paid with your standard renewal fee. For a driver license renewal that adds up to $69.50 in total, according to PennDOT. When you renew again later, you do not pay the REAL ID fee a second time.
New York works differently. A REAL ID there carries no extra fee beyond the normal transaction fees. The $30 charge in the table applies to the Enhanced license, a separate credential that is also accepted for land and sea border crossings. If you only need a card for domestic flights, the Enhanced option is not required.
California lists one fee for an original or renewal license, shown in the first table. Check your state's page to see whether the REAL ID version is priced the same as the standard card.
What a REAL ID costs by card type
State ID cards usually cost less than driver licenses, and some states offer reduced-fee or free cards for specific groups. California lists a regular ID card at $40 and a reduced-fee ID card at $11. Colorado's state ID card is $14 after its June 30, 2026 fee change, and its driver license is $34.
Washington prices its licenses by the number of years they cover. A first driver license costs $111 – $131 depending on whether you choose a six-year or eight-year term, and the Enhanced driver license costs $153 – $187. Longer terms cost more at the counter but mean fewer renewal visits.
What you may pay besides the card fee
The card itself is only part of the trip. Items that can add to your total:
- Document costs. You will need proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency. If you need a certified copy of a birth certificate or a name-change document, that comes from another agency and has its own fee.
- Online or convenience fees. Some states add a processing charge for card payments or online transactions.
- Written or driving tests. A first-time license may include test fees. A renewal or an upgrade from an existing license often does not.
- Appointment or travel costs. Some offices require an appointment, and rural residents may drive some distance to reach one.
Do you need a REAL ID at all?
Federal enforcement for domestic air travel began May 7, 2025. Since then, travelers need a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification, such as a valid U.S. passport, to board a domestic flight. Travelers who arrive without an acceptable ID may be charged a TSA ConfirmID fee of $45 to go through an alternative identity check, according to TSA.
If you already have a passport, you do not need a REAL ID to fly. A REAL ID is also not required for driving, voting, or most everyday uses of your license. For many people it comes down to convenience: one card in your wallet rather than a passport you carry to every airport.
How to check the cost in your state
- Open your state DMV or driver licensing website and search for the fee schedule or the REAL ID page.
- Identify your situation: first-time applicant, renewal, replacement, or upgrade from a standard card.
- Read whether the REAL ID version has a separate fee.
- Note the accepted payment methods before you visit.
- Gather your documents in advance so you do not have to make a second trip.
Look for the date on the fee page. Fees change after budget decisions or new legislation, and a figure from a few years ago can be wrong.
