How Much Does Walmart Pay? Hourly Wages by Role

Updated  10 sources

Starting hourly pay

$14 – $37/hr

Walmart does not pay one national rate. Stores in different states, and different jobs inside the same store, start at different amounts, which is why the published range is so wide. A cart attendant in a low-cost county and a department associate in a high-cost metro area can both be Team Associates and still start far apart.

This page covers the pay Walmart publishes for hourly roles, how that compares with what employees report, and what the numbers mean for a daily or yearly paycheck. Figures from Walmart are company statements. Figures from Payscale are self-reported by employees, and the BLS figures are medians for the occupation across all employers, not Walmart pay.

Walmart hourly pay by role

Walmart's "Working at Walmart" page gives starting ranges by job level. Team Associates, the entry-level store position, start in the $14 – $37/hr range. Team Leads, who supervise a department or area, start at $19 – $37/hr. Walmart says actual starting wages vary by region and role.

Distribution and fulfillment centers have their own range, and so does Sam's Club, which Walmart lists separately from its stores.

Walmart published pay (company)

Item Typical range
Team Lead starting hourly pay range $19 – $37/hr
Distribution and fulfillment center hourly pay range $17.85 – $40.40/hr
Sam's Club hourly pay range $16 – $37/hr
Store Lead total pay range $100,000 – $150,000/yr
Store Manager (Supercenter) total pay range $218,000 – $530,000/yr

The table also shows two salaried roles. Walmart lists those as total pay ranges rather than hourly rates, so the figures include more than base salary. A Store Lead's total pay is $100,000 – $150,000/yr, and a Supercenter Store Manager's is $218,000 – $530,000/yr. The upper end of the manager range is far above the typical hourly job, so treat it as the top of a very different career path rather than a likely outcome for a new hire.

What is the average Walmart hourly wage?

Walmart says the average U.S. hourly frontline associate makes more than $18.50/hr. That is a company-wide figure, so it blends new hires with long-tenured workers and higher-paying roles.

Payscale's employee-reported average for Walmart is lower, at $15.66/hr, with a reported range of $12.36 – $22.53/hr. The BLS median for retail salespersons across all U.S. employers sits between the two.

Why the estimates differ

The sources measure different things. Walmart's statement covers frontline hourly associates and describes pay as "more than" a level, so it is a floor on the average. Payscale relies on people who chose to submit their pay, and those profiles may be older, may come from a smaller set of stores, and can include roles outside the sales floor. The BLS number covers one occupation at every retailer, large and small. Use Walmart's figure for the company average and the other two as context.

How much does Walmart pay per day?

Walmart pays by the hour, so daily pay depends on the shift. Multiply the hourly rate by the hours scheduled that day, then subtract taxes and any benefit deductions. A short part-time shift and a full day on the same hourly rate produce very different totals.

Two things change the answer more than the base rate. The first is your store's start rate, which follows local pay conditions. The second is scheduling, because part-time associates often work fewer or irregular hours. Ask the hiring manager about typical weekly hours for the position before you compare offers.

Pay by job title

Employees who report to Payscale describe a pay ladder that is narrower than the company's published range. Cashier is the lowest-paid reported hourly title, and Maintenance Technician is the highest.

Reported pay by title (Payscale, self-reported)

Item Price
Highest-paid hourly title: Maintenance Technician $19.22/hr
Lowest-paid hourly title: Cashier $13.33/hr

These are averages for each title as reported by employees. They are not starting rates, and they do not cover every position in a store.

Walmart cashier pay by state

State minimum wages and local labor markets pull pay in different directions, and the gap shows up in the national data. The table below shows cashier pay across all employers in four states, from the BLS survey as published on O*NET OnLine. It is a guide to the local market that Walmart competes in, not a Walmart pay scale.

Cashier pay by state (all employers, BLS via O*NET OnLine)

Item Typical range Average Relative price range
Cashiers, California (typical, 10th-90th percentile) $16.71 – $23.53/hr$17.84/hr
Cashiers, Texas (typical, 10th-90th percentile) $10.62 – $17.78/hr$14.06/hr
Cashiers, New York (typical, 10th-90th percentile) $15.67 – $21.56/hr$17.07/hr
Cashiers, Mississippi (typical, 10th-90th percentile) $9.73 – $16.22/hr$12.69/hr

Sources: O*NET OnLine: Cashiers wages in California; O*NET OnLine: Cashiers wages in Texas; O*NET OnLine: Cashiers wages in New York; O*NET OnLine: Cashiers wages in Mississippi

California and New York sit well above Texas and Mississippi. A Walmart start rate in those states will usually reflect that spread, although the company does not publish a state-by-state list.

How Walmart compares with the retail market

For a sense of the wider market, the BLS medians below cover the main store occupations across all U.S. employers. The supervisor figure is a useful comparison for Team Lead roles, since it covers first-line supervisors of retail workers.

National benchmarks (all employers, BLS via O*NET OnLine)

Item Price
Cashiers (U.S. median, all employers) $15.81/hr
Stockers and order fillers (U.S. median, all employers) $17.95/hr
First-line supervisors of retail sales workers (U.S. median, all employers) $23.33/hr
