Sony WH-1000XM5 Price: Retail, Deals & Price History

The Sony WH-1000XM5 is a pair of over-ear wireless headphones known for active noise cancellation, long battery life, and comfortable fit for travel and office use. Many shoppers want a simple answer to what they cost, and the answer is more interesting than a single list price, because retailers discount these headphones often and a newer model now sits above them.

List prices below come from The Gadgeteer and were last checked on Oct 12, 2026. The list price is what Sony sets. Actual store prices can be lower during sales, and they move too often to pin to a single figure.

The XM5 is no longer Sony's newest flagship. The WH-1000XM6 came after it and lists higher. The table puts the two side by side.

SoundGuys reports a recommended retail price for the XM5 that matches the list price above. The XM6 is the successor, so the XM5 is the lower-priced way to get Sony's noise-cancelling design. If you want the latest features, compare the two before buying.

The XM5 launched in the US at $399, according to TechRadar.

The list price has held at roughly the same level since launch, so the XM5 did not get a list-price increase, but sale prices have moved with promotions throughout its life.

Yes, they are a common target for discounts. Retail events such as Prime Day, Black Friday, and back-to-school promotions often bring Sony headphones below list price. Coverage of Prime Day 2026 included Sony deals, which is the source for the list price above.

Because sale prices change quickly, this page does not quote a deal figure. Check the current price at Amazon, Best Buy, and Sony directly. A price tracker can show whether a listing is a real discount or just the usual price.

• Sales events. Prime Day and Black Friday are the best-known windows.
• Condition. Refurbished and open-box units cost less. Check the seller's warranty and return terms.
• Retailer. Amazon, Best Buy, Sony, and others can differ on the same day.
• Successor model. Once a newer model is out, retailers often clear older stock at lower prices.

The XM6 is newer and lists at $459.99. The XM5 lists at $399.99. Whether the extra money is worth it depends on which features you care about. Read reviews that compare the two directly, and look at what changed in noise cancelling, comfort, and battery life.

If your main need is solid noise cancelling for flights or a noisy office, the XM5 remains a capable pair, and any discount makes the gap larger. If you want the latest hardware and are comfortable paying more, the XM6 is the one to consider.

For commuters, frequent flyers, and open-office workers, noise cancelling is the main reason to buy, and the XM5 was built around it. If you mostly listen at home in a quiet room, cheaper headphones can sound good enough and cost much less. Also consider fit: these are large over-ear headphones, so try them if you can.

• Compare at least three retailers before ordering.
• Buy from a seller authorized by Sony. Third-party listings with unusually low prices may be counterfeit or gray market stock.
• Check the return window and the warranty terms.
• Look at the seller and condition on Amazon listings, since some are refurbished.
• Wait for a sales event if you are not in a hurry.
