Lyft Cost: Prices, Fees & Ways to Save

Updated  3 sources

Standard cost per mile

$1.01

A Lyft fare is built from several parts instead of one flat price. Lyft adds a base fare to a charge for distance and a charge for time, then applies a service fee and any local fees, tolls, or airport charges. The app shows an upfront price before you confirm a ride, and that price can rise when more people want rides than drivers are available.

Lyft publishes rate cards for different regions on its pricing pages. This guide uses three of them, for the Baltimore, Washington DC, and Richmond areas, to show how the pieces work and how much they vary. Lyft says its sample fares are estimates only, and actual fares can differ.

How Lyft Pricing Works

Each ride type has its own rate card. For a standard ride, the main components are the base fare, the cost per mile, the cost per minute, and a flat service fee. There is also a minimum fare, so a very short trip never costs less than that floor.

Your final price can still change from the rate card. Pricing varies by city and by time of day, and busy periods can raise the upfront price. Tolls and airport fees are added where they apply.

Lyft Cost in the Baltimore Area

In the Baltimore area, the standard rate card lists a base fare of $1.18, $1.01 per mile, and $0.32 per minute. The service fee is $3.60, and the minimum fare is $4.90.

Item Price
Standard base fare $1.18
Standard cost per minute $0.32
Standard service fee $3.60
Standard minimum fare $4.90
XL cost per mile $1.51
Black cost per mile $3.31
Black minimum fare $15

Larger and premium ride types cost more per mile. XL is $1.51 per mile, and Black is $3.31 per mile. Black also carries a higher minimum fare of $15, so even a short Black ride costs a lot more than a standard one.

Lyft Cost in the Washington DC Area

The Washington DC area uses a different rate card. A standard ride has a base fare of $1.22, $0.80 per mile, and $0.30 per minute. The service fee is $3.45, and the minimum fare is $4.05.

Lyft notes that trips to and from the area's major airports can carry extra charges, and other local fees can apply as well. Check the fare estimate in the app for your pickup and drop-off.

Lyft Cost in the Richmond Area

Richmond's standard rate card is lower on the base fare, at $0.44. The cost per mile is $0.83 and the cost per minute is $0.16. The service fee is $3.78.

Compare the three cities and the pattern is clear. The base fare, mile rate, and service fee all differ, and a lower base fare does not always mean a cheaper ride. A city with a low base can charge more for the service fee or for time.

What Affects a Lyft Fare

  • City and region: each area has its own rate card.
  • Ride type: standard, XL, and Black use different rates and minimums.
  • Distance and time: the mile and minute charges grow with trip length and with traffic.
  • Demand: more ride requests than available drivers can raise the upfront price.
  • Fees and tolls: service fees, airport charges, and tolls add to the total.
  • Time of day: busy periods tend to cost more than quiet ones.

Why Estimates Vary

Third-party guides often quote a single average fare, which can look very different from a rate card. An average mixes long and short trips, cities with different rates, and busy and quiet times. A rate card shows the components, so you can estimate a specific ride. It still cannot predict surge conditions on a given night.

Rate cards also change. The figures here are from the pages as published, and Lyft may update them. Use the app's upfront price as the number that applies to your ride.

Ways to Save on Lyft

  • Check the upfront price before you confirm, and wait a few minutes if demand looks high.
  • Choose a standard ride instead of XL or Black when the group size allows.
  • Avoid airport pickups when a nearby street pickup is practical.
  • Compare the upfront price with a taxi or public transit for the same trip.
  • Watch for promotions and subscription options in the app.
  • Share the ride if the app offers a shared option in your area.
