Golf Clubs Price Guide: Current Values & Sales

Updated  8 sources

Beginner set price

$499.99

Golf clubs are priced in two ways. A complete set bundles a driver, fairway wood, hybrid, irons, wedge, putter and a bag, usually built for a beginner. Individual clubs let you pick each piece, and their prices climb quickly: a single premium driver can cost more than a whole starter set. Which route is cheaper depends on how much of the bag you need.

The prices below are US retail listings from Golf Discount and TaylorMade's own store. TaylorMade prices are manufacturer list prices, and some clubs show a reduced sale price. Retailers adjust prices often, and last season's models are marked down when new ones arrive.

Complete golf club sets

A complete set is the cheapest way to start. Entry sets from Callaway and Tour Edge include most of the clubs a new player needs, and they are aimed at players who are still learning. Larger sets add more clubs and often a better bag. Junior sets are sized by the child's height or age, so they cost less than adult sets.

Complete sets

Item Price
Callaway Strata Plus 14-piece set $599.99
Callaway Strata Ultimate 16-piece set $699.99
Tour Edge TE-300 complete set $799.99
Tour Edge TE-400 13-piece set $899.99
Tour Edge Juniors Max-J complete set, ages 7 to 10 $229.99

Starter sets are not built to last forever. Many golfers replace the driver and putter first, then upgrade irons once their swing improves. If you play often, a mid-priced set such as the Tour Edge options in the table may hold up longer than the cheapest packages.

Golf driver prices

The driver is usually the most expensive single club. Premium models from the major makers carry the highest prices, while last year's driver can be much cheaper.

Drivers

Item Price
Cobra DS-Adapt X driver $299
Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Max driver $399.99
Ping G440 Max driver $447
TaylorMade Qi4D driver $649.99

Retailers often discount a driver when its successor arrives, so an older model can cost far less. If you are not chasing the newest technology, a previous-year driver is usually the better value.

Iron set prices

Irons are sold in sets, usually four or five irons through the pitching wedge, though some sets are larger. Prices depend on the model, the shaft and the number of clubs. Game-improvement irons that forgive off-center hits cost less than players' irons and forged blades. Steel shafts are standard, and graphite shafts add to the price.

Iron sets

Item Typical range Price Relative price range
TaylorMade SIM2 Max irons $557.13 – $749.99—
Ping G440 irons $858 – $1,144—
TaylorMade Qi irons (sale price) —$899.99
TaylorMade Qi Max irons —$1,099.99
TaylorMade P790 irons (sale price) —$1,199.99

Some retailers show a range for irons because the final price depends on the shaft and the number of clubs. Some manufacturers waive the upcharge on premium shafts for certain models, so read the product page.

Wedges and putters

Wedges and putters are bought one at a time. Wedge prices are lower than iron set prices because you buy a single club, though most players carry more than one wedge. Putters range from simple models to hand-finished designs from boutique makers.

Wedges and putters

Item Price
Titleist Vokey SM11 Tour Chrome wedge $199
Odyssey Ai-DUAL #7 S putter $249.99
Titleist Scotty Cameron Phantom 9.5R putter $549

Putters are the clubs where price and performance connect least. A putter that suits your stroke matters more than its brand, so try several before you buy.

What changes the price

New releases cost the most. Retailers discount the previous generation, so a club that is one or two seasons old is often the best value. Custom fitting, premium shafts and custom grips add to the price.

Buying new or used

Used clubs can lower the cost, especially for irons and drivers, which lose value quickly. Resale sites and large used-club retailers grade condition, so read the grade. Check grip wear and look for dents in the shaft and face.

What else to budget for

  • A golf bag, if your set does not include one
  • Golf balls and tees
  • Gloves and shoes
  • A fitting session, if you want clubs matched to your swing
  • Lessons, which usually improve scores more than new equipment
