HelloFresh is a meal kit service. Each week it delivers a box of portioned ingredients and recipe cards, and you cook the meals at home. You pick how many people you are feeding and how many recipes you want per week, and those two choices set your box price.

HelloFresh prices each meal by the serving. The per-serving rate falls as your weekly order grows, so the smallest plan costs the most per plate.

With two meals for two people, servings cost $12.49 each. Once you order more than two meals a week, servings drop to $10.99 each. Premium recipes and add-ons can cost more than these base rates.

The weekly box price is the per-serving rate multiplied by every serving in the box. NerdWallet lists these as the lowest and highest base box prices, before shipping and tax:

The cheapest box, $49.96, is two meals for two people. The largest plan, six meals for six people, comes to $395.64 and covers 36 servings. Most households land somewhere between those two, depending on how many people they cook for.

HelloFresh bills by the week, not by the month. Your monthly cost is your weekly box total, including shipping, multiplied by the number of weeks you take a delivery. If you skip a week, there is no charge for that week, so a month with skipped deliveries costs less.

To estimate it, take the weekly box price for your plan, add shipping, and multiply by four or five depending on the month. Add-ons and premium recipes raise the total, and introductory discounts lower the first few boxes.

Because the charge is per box rather than per meal, it adds more to each serving on a small plan. On a large plan, the same shipping charge is spread over many more servings.

• Number of people. A plan for four or six costs more per box than a plan for two.

• Add-ons. Desserts, sides, breakfast items, and extra protein are billed separately.
• Promotions. New-customer discounts apply to the first boxes, then the regular rate starts.
• Sales tax, which varies by state.

HelloFresh usually costs more per serving than buying the same ingredients at a grocery store. You are paying for recipe planning, pre-portioned ingredients, and delivery. It tends to make the most sense for people who want to cook at home but do not have time to plan meals or shop.

If you rarely cook, a prepared meal service may fit better, and if you shop on a tight budget, groceries cost less. Compare current prices on each service's own site before you choose.

• Order more than two meals a week if you will cook them, since the per-serving rate drops.
• Choose standard recipes instead of premium ones.
• Skip weeks you do not need before the weekly cutoff.
• Use a new-customer offer, and note when it ends.
