Prime Video Price: Plans, Monthly Cost & Price History

Prime Video is Amazon's streaming service. Most people get it as part of an Amazon Prime membership, which also covers shipping and other perks, but Amazon also sells Prime Video on its own for people who only want the video library. Both versions show ads by default, and removing them is a separate paid add-on.

That means the real monthly cost depends on two choices: whether you pay for full Prime or Prime Video alone, and whether you add the ad-free tier. There are two ways to get Prime Video in the US. The standalone membership gives you the streaming catalog and nothing else. An Amazon Prime membership includes Prime Video along with the shopping benefits.

Who Each Option Suits

• Prime Video standalone fits people who stream but rarely order from Amazon. It costs less than full Prime each month and skips benefits you would not use.
• Amazon Prime makes more sense if you already order from Amazon regularly. Prime Video comes bundled in, so the streaming is effectively part of a membership you might be paying for anyway.

Some titles on Prime Video are not included with either membership. New-release movies are often offered to rent or buy, and some third-party channels charge their own monthly fee through Prime Video Channels. Those charges come on top of your plan.

Ads play on Prime Video unless you pay for the ad-free tier, now called Prime Video Ultra. It is an add-on: you need Prime or a standalone Prime Video membership first, then you pay the Ultra fee on top.

So a Prime member who wants no ads pays $14.99/mo for Prime plus $4.99/mo for Ultra each month. Amazon may include other extras in Ultra beyond ad removal, and the details can change, so check the add-on description in your account settings before you subscribe.

Amazon Prime has an annual option, and Ultra can also be paid yearly. Paying once a year usually works out cheaper than twelve monthly payments, but you commit to the full year up front.

Annual billing is a good fit if you know you will keep Prime all year, for example because you use the shipping benefits. If you only want Prime Video for one series or a few months, monthly billing lets you cancel when you are done.

The ad-free option used to cost less. Amazon raised the price of the ad-free tier in April 2026, when it became Prime Video Ultra.

Before that change, removing ads cost $2.99/mo. It now costs $4.99/mo. Amazon has also changed the base Prime fee in past years, and it may do so again.

A few approaches can lower what you pay:

• Go standalone if you do not need Amazon's shopping benefits.
• Pay annually for Prime if you plan to keep it all year.
• Keep the ads if they do not bother you; skipping Ultra is the simplest saving.
• Check discounted Prime programs. Amazon offers reduced Prime memberships for some groups, such as students and people receiving certain government assistance. Eligibility and pricing are set by Amazon, so check the official Prime page.
• Look for bundles. Some phone and internet providers include Prime or Prime Video with certain plans. Read the terms, since bundled access may end when the promotion does.

Sales tax may apply to digital subscriptions in some states, so your final charge can be a little higher than the listed price.
