Holland Tunnel Toll Cost: Prices, Fees & Ways to Save

Updated  1 source

Passenger car toll with E-ZPass

$14.79 – $16.79

The Holland Tunnel links Jersey City, New Jersey, with Lower Manhattan, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates it. Drivers pay a toll only when entering New York, so the crossing into Manhattan is charged and the trip back to New Jersey is free. The rate depends on your vehicle class, the time of day, and how you pay.

The Port Authority publishes its toll schedule on its website, and the figures here come from the version labeled July 2026. Tolls change, so confirm the current rate at panynj.gov before you cross.

Holland Tunnel toll by payment method

For a standard passenger car, the toll falls into four levels. The lowest is the E-ZPass off-peak rate. The highest is Tolls by Mail, where a camera reads your license plate and the bill goes to the registered owner.

Passenger car (Class 1) toll by payment method

Item Price
E-ZPass, off-peak $14.79
E-ZPass, peak $16.79
E-ZPass, mid-tier (tag not mounted correctly) $19.55
Tolls by Mail $23.30

The gap between the lowest and highest levels is large. Paying by Tolls by Mail instead of off-peak E-ZPass adds $23.30 against $14.79 for the same crossing. Over a year of regular commuting, that difference adds up fast.

Peak versus off-peak

E-ZPass rates change with the time of day. The peak rate of $16.79 applies during the busiest travel periods, and the off-peak rate of $14.79 applies the rest of the time. The Port Authority defines the peak windows on its toll page, and they can differ between weekdays and weekends, so read the current hours there.

If your schedule is flexible, crossing off peak costs less and often means less traffic as well.

What the mid-tier rate means

The mid-tier rate is for drivers who have a New York or New Jersey E-ZPass account but whose tag was not read properly. The Port Authority introduced it to encourage drivers to mount the tag correctly on the windshield. The rate is $19.55, which is higher than the standard E-ZPass rates but lower than Tolls by Mail.

To avoid it, mount the tag according to the instructions that came with it. The Port Authority also requires your plate to be registered on an active account in good standing.

Motorcycles and larger vehicles

Other vehicle classes pay different tolls.

Two-axle vehicles with dual rear wheels fall into a separate class.

Item Price
Class 2, E-ZPass off-peak $43.34
Class 2, E-ZPass peak $45.34

Classes for buses, trucks with more axles, and vehicles with trailers have their own rates in the full schedule. If you drive something other than a standard car, read the schedule for your class.

Is the toll cashless?

Yes. Port Authority crossings are cashless, so there is no booth where you can pay with cash. You pay with E-ZPass or through Tolls by Mail. Out-of-state drivers should note that the E-ZPass discounts apply only to New York and New Jersey E-ZPass accounts, according to the Port Authority.

Ways to cut the cost

  • Get an E-ZPass account. The Port Authority's discounts require a New York or New Jersey account, so check the plans on its E-ZPass page.
  • Cross off peak. The off-peak rate is lower, and your schedule may allow it.
  • Check for discount plans. The Port Authority lists discount plans that need enrollment, such as one for low-emission vehicles. Read the eligibility rules.
  • Consider transit. For a day in Manhattan, a train or bus can cost less than driving once you add the toll and parking.
