Spotify is a music streaming service that puts songs, podcasts, and audiobooks in one app. You can listen free with ads and limits, or pay for Premium, which removes ads and lets you play any song on demand and download music for offline listening. Premium comes in four plans, priced by who will use it.

Spotify Premium starts at $6.99/mo for eligible students. For everyone else, Premium Individual costs $12.99/mo.

Which Spotify Plan Fits You

Premium Individual, at $12.99/mo, covers one account. It is the default choice if you are the only listener.

Premium Duo costs $18.99/mo and gives two separate accounts for two people who live at the same address. Each person keeps their own playlists and recommendations. For a couple, it costs less than two Individual plans.

Premium Family costs $21.99/mo and covers several accounts for members of one household. It includes parental controls and a filter for explicit content, which helps if children are on the plan. Spotify requires everyone to live at the same address.

Premium Student costs $6.99/mo for students at an accredited college or university who pass Spotify's verification. Eligibility has to be confirmed periodically, and the plan is meant for students only.

The free tier costs nothing, but it plays ads, limits skips, and on mobile often plays music in shuffle mode rather than letting you pick any track. You also cannot download songs for offline listening.

Premium removes ads, lets you play any song in any order, and allows offline downloads. If you listen daily, especially on a phone or during commutes, Premium is the plan most people end up paying for. Light listeners at a computer may be fine with the free tier.

Spotify has raised US prices more than once in recent years. The latest increase took effect in February 2026; an earlier one came in July 2024. These are the prices before each change:

In February 2026, Premium Individual went from $11.99/mo to $12.99/mo. Duo rose from $16.99/mo to $18.99/mo, and Family rose from $19.99/mo to $21.99/mo. In the July 2024 increase, Individual went from $10.99/mo to $11.99/mo.

Existing subscribers usually receive an email before a price change and are billed at the new rate from a later billing date. If you pay through a bundle, a carrier, or an app store, the timing of a change may follow that provider's terms instead.

The listed price may not be your final charge. Depending on your state and city, sales tax or local fees may apply to digital subscriptions.

Spotify Premium is also available through some phone carriers, internet providers, and other bundles. When you pay through a partner, the price, plan type, and billing date can differ from spotify.com. If you already get Premium through a partner, check which plan it includes before paying separately.

• Use the Student plan if you qualify. It costs the least of any Premium plan.
• Share a Duo or Family plan with people you live with instead of paying for separate Individual plans.
• Check whether your phone plan or another subscription already includes Spotify Premium.
• Watch for introductory offers for new Premium users, and note when the regular price starts.
• Stay on the free tier if you only listen occasionally.
